Four things worth having to hand

None of these are essential — ring anyway if you have none of them. But with these four, most jobs can be scoped and dated on the first call.

• What needs examining, and how many

  Passenger lift, platform lift, forklift, MEWP, BMU cradle, tail lift, chains and slings — and the number of each. A six-lift office block and a single stairlift are different visits.

• The site postcode

  Not the billing address. Where the equipment physically is decides the travel and whether several of your sites can be covered in one day.

• The date of the last thorough examination

  It is on the last report or certificate. If you cannot find it, say so — that is common, and it is a question we can work backwards from rather than a problem.

• Whether anything is out of service

  Equipment that is stopped, taped off, or that someone has told you not to use changes the order things get done in.
