Engineering Approach

What our overdue LOLER inspection programme delivers

Independent, defensible statutory examination by an engineer with deep hands-on plant experience.

  • Next working day attendance for an overdue passenger lift in London, and same-week scheduling for other equipment. If a date cannot be met you are told on the call
  • Defensible Report of Thorough Examination — LOLER 1998 Reg 10
  • Practical guidance on quarantine, isolation and remedial pathways
  • Out-of-hours and weekend slots subject to availability
  • Interval tracking afterwards — we hold the equipment register and next-due dates and contact you before the next examination is due, so a lapse does not repeat
  • Independent of your maintenance contractor — no conflict of interest
  • Reports flag any PUWER 1998 maintenance-duty exposure created alongside the lapsed LOLER certificate

What to do now

If an examination is overdue, there is no current evidence the equipment is safe. The practical steps are:

  • Stop using it: take the equipment out of use until it has been examined, or as a minimum stop anyone riding in or on it
  • Look for the last report: the maintenance company or previous managing agent may hold it
  • Book an examination: call and say it is overdue; it is treated as urgent
  • Tell whoever needs to know: insurers and building users, so nobody is caught out

Stopping it happening again

Most lapses happen because nobody owns the date: a managing agent changes, a maintenance contract ends, or equipment arrives with a building and never goes on a register. After the examination we keep the record and next-due date and remind you before the next one, so it does not lapse again.

What happens when a LOLER examination expires?

What you get after the inspection

A Report of Thorough Examination with everything LOLER Schedule 1 requires — including the equipment identified, the date examined, its safe working load, any defect with what must be done and by when, and the date the next examination is due — with each defect graded by severity. On top of that:

  • Same-day report: issued digitally on the day of the inspection, not weeks later
  • Photographs: of what was inspected and of any defect, in every report as standard
  • Records and reminders: we keep the record on file and remind you before the next one falls due

If anything is not safe to use, you are told in writing before we leave. Because we sell no repairs, a defect on the report is never a quotation in disguise.

Common Questions

Overdue LOLER Inspection FAQs

Can I keep using equipment while the examination is overdue?

You should not. Without a current examination there is no evidence it is safe, and using it is a breach of LOLER. Take it out of use, or at the very least stop anyone riding in or on it, until it has been examined.

How quickly can you attend?

Next working day for an overdue passenger lift in London, and usually the same week for other equipment. If a date cannot be met you are told on the call, not afterwards.

We cannot find the last report. What now?

Treat the equipment as unexamined. Ask the maintenance company and any previous managing agent for a copy, but book an examination rather than waiting.

Does an overdue examination affect our insurance?

It can. Many policies require statutory examinations to be current, and an insurer may question a claim involving equipment without one. Tell your insurer or broker once it has been examined.

Is an overdue examination harder or more expensive?

The examination itself is the same. Lapsed equipment sometimes has more defects because nobody has looked at it for longer, and those go on the report with dates for repair.

How soon do I get the report?

The same day, with photographs, so you can show the equipment is back in compliance straight away.

How do we stop it happening again?

We keep the record and next-due date for every item we examine and remind you before it falls due.
