LOLER Inspections for Hotels & Leisure

A hotel cannot close a lift at check-out. It also runs a class of lifting equipment most estates teams never think of as lifting equipment at all — the dumbwaiter between kitchen and restaurant, and the hoist at the side of the pool.

What Makes This Sector Different

The compliance pressures specific to hotels and leisure venues

Pool and spa hoists lift people

A poolside hoist puts a guest into the water, so it sits on LOLER's six-monthly cycle. It is routinely held on a leisure-maintenance schedule rather than a statutory examination register, which is not the same duty and will not satisfy an inspector.

Kitchen service lifts are lifting equipment

Dumbwaiters running between kitchen, restaurant and cellar are goods lifts under LOLER on a twelve-monthly cycle. They are small, they are behind a service door, and they are one of the most consistently missing items from a hotel's register.

An out-of-service lift closes your accessible rooms

Accessible bedrooms above ground floor depend on the passenger lift working. Beyond the LOLER duty, that engages the Equality Act 2010 — which is why we schedule hotel examinations around occupancy rather than against it.

Our Experience Here

Why we say this

Hotel and leisure sites are part of Mark's 26+ years of lifting equipment engineering experience, alongside the commercial property portfolios described on our about page.

Who enforces here

The local authority. Hotels, catering and leisure premises are council-enforced, so your pool hoist and passenger lift records are an environmental health matter rather than an HSE one.

Talk to the engineer, not a call handler

Every survey is scoped by an engineer who has worked on this class of plant. If your question is whether a particular machine falls under LOLER, PUWER or both, that is a conversation worth having before you book anything.

Common Questions

Hotels & Leisure — Common Questions

Do you carry out LOLER inspections for hotels and leisure venues?

Yes. Hotel and leisure sites are part of Mark's 26+ years of lifting equipment engineering experience, alongside the commercial property portfolios described on our about page. We examine the classes of plant listed on this page, and every survey is scoped by an engineer with a background in that equipment.

Pool and spa hoists lift people — what does that mean in practice?

A poolside hoist puts a guest into the water, so it sits on LOLER's six-monthly cycle. It is routinely held on a leisure-maintenance schedule rather than a statutory examination register, which is not the same duty and will not satisfy an inspector.

Kitchen service lifts are lifting equipment — what does that mean in practice?

An out-of-service lift closes your accessible rooms — what does that mean in practice?

Accessible bedrooms above ground floor depend on the passenger lift working. Beyond the LOLER duty, that engages the Equality Act 2010 — which is why we schedule hotel examinations around occupancy rather than against it.

Are you independent of maintenance contractors?

Yes. We do not sell maintenance, repairs, spares or replacement plant, so a defect recorded in a Report of Thorough Examination is never a quotation in disguise. For a duty-holder presenting compliance evidence to an insurer, a client or the HSE, that separation is worth being able to state plainly.
