LOLER & PUWER Inspections for Manufacturing

A production site is the one place where LOLER and PUWER genuinely overlap on the shop floor. Overhead cranes and slings sit under LOLER; power presses, guillotines, press brakes, woodworking machinery and abrasive wheels sit under PUWER — and only one of those two regimes is widely understood.

What Makes This Sector Different

The compliance pressures specific to manufacturing and industrial sites

Power presses have fixed statutory intervals

PUWER Regulations 32 to 35 set fixed thorough examination intervals for power presses and their guards: twelve months with fixed guards only, six months otherwise, plus a guard check by an appointed person in the first four hours of each working period. They are structurally similar to a LOLER thorough examination, and commonly assumed not to exist because PUWER sets no general interval.

Two regimes, one shop floor

A site can hold perfect LOLER records for its overhead cranes and nothing at all for its guillotine, press brake or abrasive wheels. We survey against both so the gap is visible before an inspector finds it.

Lifting accessories on a production line

Chains, slings and lifting beams used in a press shop or foundry live a harder life than the six-month interval assumes. Where duty warrants it we will draft an examination scheme rather than apply the default.

Our Experience Here

Why we say this

Mark's career includes large-scale industrial sites and lifting plant defect investigation.

Who enforces here

HSE. Factories and manufacturing premises are HSE-enforced, and power presses under PUWER Regulations 32 to 35 are a well-known inspection target.

Talk to the engineer, not a call handler

Every survey is scoped by an engineer who has worked on this class of plant. If your question is whether a particular machine falls under LOLER, PUWER or both, that is a conversation worth having before you book anything.

Common Questions

Manufacturing & Industrial — Common Questions

Do you carry out LOLER inspections for manufacturing and industrial sites?

Yes. Mark's career includes large-scale industrial sites and lifting plant defect investigation. We examine the classes of plant listed on this page, and every survey is scoped by an engineer with a background in that equipment.

Power presses have fixed statutory intervals — what does that mean in practice?

PUWER Regulations 32 to 35 set fixed thorough examination intervals for power presses and their guards: twelve months with fixed guards only, six months otherwise, plus a guard check by an appointed person in the first four hours of each working period. They are structurally similar to a LOLER thorough examination, and commonly assumed not to exist because PUWER sets no general interval.

Two regimes, one shop floor — what does that mean in practice?

A site can hold perfect LOLER records for its overhead cranes and nothing at all for its guillotine, press brake or abrasive wheels. We survey against both so the gap is visible before an inspector finds it.

Lifting accessories on a production line — what does that mean in practice?

Chains, slings and lifting beams used in a press shop or foundry live a harder life than the six-month interval assumes. Where duty warrants it we will draft an examination scheme rather than apply the default.

Are you independent of maintenance contractors?

Yes. We do not sell maintenance, repairs, spares or replacement plant, so a defect recorded in a Report of Thorough Examination is never a quotation in disguise. For a duty-holder presenting compliance evidence to an insurer, a client or the HSE, that separation is worth being able to state plainly.
