Sheet-Metal Guarding Compliance

Guillotine & Press Brake Inspections in London

Independent inspection of guillotines and press brakes against PUWER 1998 Regulation 11 — fixed and interlocked guarding, light-curtain function and two-hand control verification for sheet-metal fabrication equipment. The written report, with photographs, comes the same day, and we remind you when the next inspection is due.

Engineering Approach

What our guillotine & press brake inspection programme delivers

Independent, defensible inspection by an engineer with deep hands-on plant experience.

  • Fixed and interlocked guard verification against PUWER Regulation 11
  • Light-curtain and safety-device function testing where fitted
  • Two-hand control synchronisation and timing checks
  • Blade and back-gauge condition inspection on guillotines
  • Independent written report for HSE inspection and insurer audit
  • Examination following guard modification or safety-device retrofit

What a guillotine and press brake inspection covers

Both machines close a blade or tool with enough force to sever fingers, so the inspection concentrates on keeping hands out of the danger zone:

  • Fixed guards: front, side and rear guards, condition and gaps
  • Interlocked guards: that the machine cannot cycle with a guard open
  • Light curtains and laser guards: function, coverage and safety distance
  • Two-hand and foot controls: synchronisation, timing and guarding of foot pedals
  • Emergency stops: every stop, and that it stops the machine as it should
  • Hold-downs: guillotine hold-down guarding and condition
  • Blades and tooling: blade condition and tool clamping
  • Back-gauge area: rear access and guarding

Light curtain safety distances and rear access are where these machines most often fail.

How often to inspect

Guillotines and hydraulic press brakes are outside the power press regulations, so there is no fixed statutory interval for them; a mechanical press brake with a flywheel and clutch is a power press, with fixed intervals of its own. For the rest, PUWER 1998 still requires guarding and inspection at intervals set by risk assessment, and after any guard modification, safety-device retrofit or repair that could affect safety. Operators should check light curtains and safety devices each shift.

What is PUWER?

What you get after the inspection

A written inspection report identifying the machine, what was checked, any defect with how serious it is and what must be done and by when, and when the next inspection should be. On top of that:

  • Same-day report: issued digitally on the day of the inspection, not weeks later
  • Photographs: of what was inspected and of any defect, in every report as standard
  • Records and reminders: we keep the record on file and remind you before the next one falls due

If anything is not safe to use, you are told in writing before we leave. Because we sell no repairs, a defect on the report is never a quotation in disguise.

Assets We Examine

Asset classes covered under our guillotine & press brake inspection programme.

Mechanical & Hydraulic Guillotines

Blade, back-gauge and guarding inspection on sheet-metal guillotines.

Press Brakes

Guarding and safety-device checks on hydraulic press brakes. A mechanical press brake with a flywheel and clutch is a power press, examined at the fixed power press intervals.

Light Curtains & Safety Devices

Function testing of photoelectric safety devices fitted to guarding systems.

Two-Hand Control Systems

Timing and synchronisation checks on two-hand operating controls.

Common Questions

Guillotine & Press Brake Inspection FAQs

Are guillotines and press brakes covered by the power press regulations?

Guillotines are not, and nor are hydraulic press brakes, so neither has a fixed statutory interval; both are still work equipment under PUWER, which requires guarding and inspection at intervals set by risk assessment. A mechanical press brake with a flywheel and clutch is a power press, examined every twelve months with fixed guards only and every six months otherwise.

What does the inspection check?

Fixed and interlocked guards, light curtains and laser guards, two-hand controls, emergency stops, hold-downs and blade condition on guillotines, and the back-gauge area.

How often should a press brake be inspected?

A hydraulic press brake: at intervals set by risk assessment, and after any guard modification, safety-device retrofit or repair that could affect safety. A mechanical press brake with a flywheel and clutch is a power press: every twelve months with fixed guards only, every six months otherwise, with a guard check by an appointed person in the first four hours of each working period. Light curtains and safety devices should also be checked by the operator each shift.

Can you inspect our fabrication shop without stopping production?

Yes. We work machine by machine and agree the order with your production team.

Do older press brakes need retrofitting with light curtains?

Not automatically. The question is whether the guarding in place adequately prevents access to the danger zone. Where it does not, safety devices such as light curtains or laser guards are a common solution, and the report will say so.

What happens if a machine fails?

If it is unsafe, you are told in writing before we leave and it should not be used until put right.

How soon do I get the report?

The same day, with photographs.
