Engineering Approach

What our crane inspection programme delivers

Independent, defensible statutory examination by an engineer with deep hands-on plant experience.

  • Twelve-monthly statutory examination under LOLER 1998 Regulation 9, with the slings and accessories used with the crane on their own six-monthly cycle
  • Mobile cranes, tower cranes and lorry-mounted loader cranes covered
  • Structural, hydraulic, slewing and overload-protection system verification
  • Defects classified against SAFed severity categories A, B and C
  • Independent of crane hire and maintenance contractors — no conflict of interest
  • Coordinated around site lifting plans to minimise programme disruption

What a crane inspection covers

A crane thorough examination covers the structure, everything in the load path, and every device that stops the crane being overloaded or driven past its limits:

  • Structure: boom or jib, chassis, slew ring and its bolts, and welds at the high-stress points
  • Ropes and reeving: hoist and luffing ropes, terminations, drums and sheaves
  • Hook block: the hook, its safety catch, swivel and wear
  • Brakes: hoist, slew and travel brakes and whether they hold
  • Rated capacity indicator: the system that warns of and prevents overload, tested against the crane's duty
  • Limits: hoist, derrick, slew and anti-two-block limits
  • Outriggers and stabilisers: beams, jacks, pads and their interlocks
  • Controls and marking: controls, emergency stops, load charts and capacity plates

Rated capacity indicators and limits are where cranes most often fail, and both are tested rather than taken on trust.

Twelve months, six, and after installation

LOLER 1998 Regulation 9 sets twelve months for a crane lifting goods and six months if it is used to lift people. Where a crane's safety depends on how it is installed, as with a tower crane, it also needs a thorough examination after installation and before first use at each new site. Slings and other accessories used with it are six-monthly.

How often does a crane need a thorough examination?

What you get after the inspection

A Report of Thorough Examination with everything LOLER Schedule 1 requires — including the crane identified, the date examined, its safe working load, any defect with what must be done and by when, and the date the next examination is due — with each defect graded by severity. On top of that:

  • Same-day report: issued digitally on the day of the inspection, not weeks later
  • Photographs: of what was inspected and of any defect, in every report as standard
  • Records and reminders: we keep the record on file and remind you before the next one falls due

If anything is not safe to use, you are told in writing before we leave. Because we sell no repairs, a defect on the report is never a quotation in disguise.

Common Questions

Crane Inspection FAQs

How often does a crane need a LOLER thorough examination?

At least every twelve months for a crane lifting goods, and every six months if it is ever used to lift people, for example with a man-riding basket. The slings, chains and other accessories used with it are six-monthly. A written scheme of examination can set different intervals.

Does a tower crane need examining when it is moved to a new site?

Yes. Where safety depends on how the crane is installed, LOLER requires a thorough examination after installation and before first use at each new location, as well as the periodic examinations while it stands.

Is a lorry loader crane covered by the vehicle's MOT?

No. An MOT covers the vehicle, not the crane mounted on it. A lorry loader needs its own LOLER thorough examination, at least every twelve months, and its own report.

Can you examine a crane around our lifting programme?

Yes. We agree a window with the appointed person or site manager so the examination fits the lift plan, and issue the report the same day with photographs.

Is the rated capacity indicator tested?

Yes. The rated capacity indicator is what stops the crane being overloaded, so it is tested as part of the examination rather than just checked for a display.

Do you examine the slings and accessories too?

Yes. Slings, chains, shackles and other accessories used with the crane are six-monthly and can be examined on the same visit, each recorded separately.

Do you sell crane hire or repairs?

No. We examine and report. Your own crane engineer or hire company carries out any repairs, so nothing on our report is a sales pitch.
