Engineering Approach

What our abrasive wheel inspection programme delivers

Independent, defensible inspection by an engineer with deep hands-on plant experience.

  • Wheel mounting and blotter checks, alongside PUWER Regulation 9's training duty for whoever mounts wheels
  • Guard adequacy and exposure-angle checks on bench and pedestal grinders
  • Speed-rating and maximum operating speed (MOS) verification
  • Condition inspection identifying cracked, chipped or out-of-round wheels
  • Written record for your PUWER compliance and training file
  • Practical guidance on safe mounting procedure for on-site operators

What an abrasive wheel inspection covers

A wheel that bursts at speed is the main risk, so the inspection checks everything that keeps the wheel intact and contained:

  • Wheel marking: maximum operating speed, specification and expiry where marked
  • Speed match: that the spindle speed does not exceed the wheel's maximum
  • Mounting: flanges, blotters and how the wheel is fitted
  • Wheel condition: cracks, chips, out-of-round wear and loading
  • Guards: coverage, condition and adjustment
  • Work rests: set close to the wheel on bench and pedestal grinders
  • Eye protection: screens or other protection at the machine
  • Controls and isolation: switches, emergency stops and isolation

Work rests set too far from the wheel and missing or mis-set guards are the most common findings.

How often to inspect

PUWER 1998 sets no fixed interval for abrasive wheel equipment. Users should check the wheel, guard and rest before use, and a competent person should inspect at intervals set by risk assessment, and whenever a wheel is changed or a machine is damaged. Only trained, competent people should mount wheels.

What is PUWER?

What you get after the inspection

A written inspection report identifying the grinder, what was checked, any defect with how serious it is and what must be done and by when, and when the next inspection should be. On top of that:

  • Same-day report: issued digitally on the day of the inspection, not weeks later
  • Photographs: of what was inspected and of any defect, in every report as standard
  • Records and reminders: we keep the record on file and remind you before the next one falls due

If anything is not safe to use, you are told in writing before we leave. Because we sell no repairs, a defect on the report is never a quotation in disguise.

Common Questions

Abrasive Wheel Inspection FAQs

Who is allowed to change a grinding wheel?

Only someone trained and competent to mount abrasive wheels. Wrong mounting, an over-speed wheel or a missing blotter can cause a wheel to burst, which is why PUWER requires that training.

How often should grinders be inspected?

Users should check the wheel, guard and rest before each use. A competent person should inspect the equipment at intervals set by risk assessment, and whenever a wheel is changed or the machine is damaged.

What does an abrasive wheel inspection check?

Wheel condition and marking, maximum operating speed against the spindle speed, flanges and blotters, guard coverage and adjustment, the work rest gap on bench grinders, and the controls.

Do you also train staff to mount wheels?

No. We inspect and report. We can point you to recognised abrasive wheel training, and our report sets out what we found and what needs to be done.

Do hand-held angle grinders need inspecting too?

Yes. Angle grinders and cut-off saws are abrasive wheel equipment, and the same checks apply: speed rating, guard, condition and fitting.

What happens if a wheel fails?

It is taken out of use straight away and the report records why. A cracked or over-speed wheel should be destroyed, not set aside.

How soon do I get the report?

The same day, with photographs.
