Electric Slab, Rough-Terrain & High-Reach Scissors

Scissor Lift Inspections in London

Independent six-monthly LOLER thorough examination of scissor lifts: electric slab scissors used indoors, rough-terrain diesel scissors on site, and high-reach scissor platforms. A scissor lift lifts people, so it is six-monthly. We examine on site, in your warehouse or at your yard, issue the report with photographs the same day, and remind you before the next one is due.

Engineering Approach

What our scissor lift inspection programme delivers

Independent, defensible statutory examination by an engineer with deep hands-on plant experience.

  • Six-monthly LOLER thorough examination: scissor lifts carry people
  • Electric slab, rough-terrain and high-reach scissor lifts
  • Pothole protection, overload and tilt sensing, and emergency lowering all tested
  • Report with photographs issued the same day, and a reminder before the next is due
  • Single machines or whole fleets, on site or at your yard
  • Independent: we sell no scissor lifts, hire or repairs

What a scissor lift inspection covers

A scissor lift looks simple, but the examination covers every system that stops it tipping, dropping or trapping someone. On a typical scissor lift that means:

  • Scissor pack: arms, pins, bushes, welds and the lift cylinder mounts
  • Lift cylinder and hydraulics: the cylinder, holding valve, hoses and any drift with load on the deck
  • Pothole protection: the guards that drop when the platform rises, so the machine cannot tip into a hole or off an edge
  • Overload and tilt sensing: the systems that stop the lift if the deck is overloaded or the machine is out of level
  • Emergency lowering: the manual descent valve and ground controls, so someone can be brought down if the operator cannot
  • Deck, rails and gates: the platform floor, extension deck, guardrails, entry gate and anchor points
  • Drive, brakes and limits: travel, steering and brakes, and the reduced drive speed when raised
  • Batteries and electrics: battery condition, charger, wiring, alarms and emergency stops

Pothole protection, overload sensing and emergency lowering are where scissor lifts most often fail, and all three are tested, not just looked at.

Why scissor lifts are six-monthly

A scissor lift is a MEWP, and LOLER 1998 Regulation 9 sets six months for any lifting equipment that carries people. That applies whether the machine is owned, hired or on long-term rental, and however little it is used. A hired scissor should arrive with evidence of its last thorough examination; check it before use. The operator's pre-use check every shift is still needed and does not replace the examination.

How often does a MEWP need a LOLER inspection?

What you get after the inspection

A Report of Thorough Examination with everything LOLER Schedule 1 requires — including the scissor lift identified, the date examined, its safe working load, any defect with what must be done and by when, and the date the next examination is due — with each defect graded by severity. On top of that:

  • Same-day report: issued digitally on the day of the inspection, not weeks later. The trade convention is 28 days
  • Photographs: of what was examined and of any defect, in every report as standard
  • Records and reminders: we keep each machine's record on file and remind you before the next six-monthly examination falls due

If it is not safe to use, you are told in writing before we leave. Because we sell no repairs, a defect on the report is never a quotation in disguise.

Common Questions

Scissor Lift Inspection FAQs

Does a scissor lift need a LOLER inspection?

Yes. A scissor lift is a mobile elevating work platform that lifts people, so LOLER requires a thorough examination by a competent person at least every six months.

How often does a scissor lift need inspecting?

A LOLER thorough examination at least every six months, plus a pre-use check by the operator every shift. The pre-use check catches obvious damage; it does not replace the six-monthly examination.

We hire our scissor lift. Who arranges the inspection?

The hire company must supply it with evidence of its last thorough examination. If you keep it past the six-month date, the next examination still has to happen, so agree with the hire company who arranges it.

What fails most often on a scissor lift?

Pothole protection that no longer deploys, overload or tilt sensing that has been bypassed or drifted out of calibration, emergency lowering that does not work, and worn pins and bushes in the scissor pack.

Can you inspect our scissor lifts in the warehouse?

Yes. We examine them where they work, one at a time, so the rest of your access equipment stays available.

How soon do I get the report?

The same day, with photographs. If a scissor lift is unsafe, you are told in writing before we leave.

Do you also inspect boom lifts and cherry pickers?

Yes. Booms, cherry pickers, mast lifts and vehicle-mounted platforms are covered on our MEWP page, and can be examined on the same visit.
