Six-Monthly Thorough Examination — King's Cross to Hampstead

Passenger Lift Inspections in Camden

Independent six-monthly thorough examination of passenger lifts across Camden. The borough runs from some of the newest buildings in London at King's Cross to Victorian terraces and mansion flats in Hampstead, with university, hospital and council estate lifts in between.

The passenger-lift stock in Camden

King's Cross and Euston are dominated by new offices and residential towers with modern traction and machine-room-less lifts. Holborn and Bloomsbury hold older office stock, university buildings and student accommodation, where lifts carry heavy term-time traffic. Kentish Town, Camden Town and Swiss Cottage have large council and housing association estates whose lifts are the only accessible route for many residents. Hampstead and Belsize Park have mansion blocks and converted houses with small, older lifts.

What the six-monthly examination covers

Every one of these is six-monthly. Student accommodation and estate lifts take heavy use and some abuse, so door equipment, landing controls and car finishes are where defects usually show. In a residential block with a single lift, the visit is planned so that residents who cannot use the stairs know when the lift will be out of service and for how long.

Areas covered around Camden

Passenger lifts carry people, so the statutory interval is six months — not twelve.

Common Questions

Passenger lift inspections in Camden — common questions

Our block has only one lift. How long will it be out of service?

Usually an hour or two, depending on the lift. The brake, governor and safety gear cannot be proved on a lift that is carrying people, so it has to come out of service while that is done. We agree the time with you in advance so residents can be told, and it only stays out of service if the examination finds it unsafe.

Do lifts in student accommodation need examining every six months?

Yes. Any lift that carries people is on the six-monthly interval, whoever the people are. Student blocks are often heavily used through term and quiet in the holidays, so a visit can usually be timed for the vacation if that suits the operator.
