Six-Monthly Thorough Examination — Shoreditch to Stoke Newington

Passenger Lift Inspections in Hackney

Independent six-monthly thorough examination of passenger lifts across Hackney. Over the last twenty years the borough has gained a large stock of new lifts, in offices around Shoreditch and in residential blocks from Dalston to Hackney Wick, alongside the older lifts in its council estates.

The passenger-lift stock in Hackney

Shoreditch and Hoxton hold converted warehouses and new office buildings, many with machine-room-less lifts. Dalston, Hackney Central and Hackney Wick have mixed-use blocks with shops below and flats above, where the flats may share a lift with the shops or have their own. Estate regeneration areas such as Woodberry Down combine brand-new towers with older blocks that are still occupied, so one landlord can hold lifts of very different ages.

What the six-monthly examination covers

Six months for every one of them. On newer machine-room-less lifts much of the equipment sits in the shaft or headroom, so the examiner needs safe access there and the visit takes slightly longer than on a lift with a motor room. On mixed-use buildings it matters to be clear who controls which lift, because the shop operator and the residential landlord can have separate duties in the same building.

Areas covered around Hackney

Passenger lifts carry people, so the statutory interval is six months — not twelve.

Common Questions

Passenger lift inspections in Hackney — common questions

Our building has a lift for the shops and one for the flats. Who is responsible for each?

Whoever controls each lift. Often that is the residential landlord or managing agent for the flats' lift and the commercial tenant or landlord for the other, but it depends on the leases. Each lift needs its own six-monthly examination and its own report, whoever ends up arranging it.

What is different about examining a machine-room-less lift?

Nothing in the law: it is six-monthly like any passenger lift. In practice the motor, brake and controller sit in the shaft or at the landing rather than in a motor room, so getting safe access to them takes longer and needs planning with the building.
